A martial art performance at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala Show on Monday night became an immediate national sensation. The show entitled “Walking Clouds, Flowing Water” starred three tai chi performers practicing their moves on top of landmark buildings in three cities: Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangzhou of Guangdong province.

The media poured words of praise onto their performance, captured with cutting-edge camera technologies. Wenhui Daily said the performance “took the Internet by wonder”.

In the hometown of Liang Biying, Foshan of Guangdong province, the local paper Pearl River Business News said Liang, who is the only female actor of the three, and the other two performers’ movements “combined strength and flexibility”, “leaving audiences feeling like they were watching a martial arts blockbuster movie”.

According to Liang, “Walking Clouds, Flowing Water” adopted avant-garde camera technologies and techniques to create a unique representation of traditional Chinese martial arts. “Standing on top of the skyscraper, we felt like being in a jungle of steel. I could not help but marvel at the glorious sceneries. What the show wanted to express was a clash between traditional culture and modern urban civilization. We hoped to present a new harmony between human, Nature and city.”

Liang was born in Foshan in 1998, and started to learn martial arts when she was 8 years old. She began her formal training in tai chi in 2008 and in 2019 she won a gold medal in tai chi at the World Wushu Championship.

In February 2020 Liang posted clips of her practicing tai chi on the balcony during the ongoing pandemic. The 21-year-old was a senior student at the Shanghai University of Sport at that time. Her videos on Douyin inspired so many people, that she was invited to give livestreaming classes for patients getting treated with the virus in Wuhan of Hubei province.

"The best thing about tai chi is that it is very inclusive and good for the body and mind. It can be performed anywhere and also by every person because it is not intense," she told China Daily at that time.

Widely practiced across China in parks and community squares, tai chi is recognized as one of the country’s most iconic activities.

According to popular fiction and movies, the martial art was created by a Taoist monk named Zhang Sanfeng in the 13th century. Based on Tao Te Ching, the classic Chinese text written by Lao Tze around the late 4th century BC, the essence of tai chi lies in the conditioning of spiritual and mental awareness. The book also says that tai chi is best illustrated by the symbolic Taoist pattern: a half black-half white circle that represents yin and yang respectively.

The message within this symbol is that what seems opposite may be interchangeable, that good may become bad, and that the powerful may lose to the weak.
